Strum was founded in 1995 in Bedford, Nova Scotia to address a need for environmental consulting of domestic oil spills. Within a few years, the Company began diversifying into other services and is currently experiencing a period of significant growth to meet the ongoing demands of our clients.
Today, Strum Consulting has grown to over 160 employees with locations throughout Atlantic Canada. Their multi-disciplinary team consists of certified site professionals (certified across multiple provinces), Engineers, Geologists and Hydrogeologists, Biologists, Technologists, Legal Land Surveyors, and Environmental Specialists.
The Role
The Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager at Strum Consulting will play a pivotal role in supporting and expanding the company’s environmental services in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Maritimes. This role involves leading and managing projects, providing expert guidance on environmental assessments, and fostering client relationships to ensure the highest quality of service. They will work on a diverse array of exciting projects, including emerging technologies in the renewable energy sector, and interact with a varied client base while contributing valued input in a collaborative team environment. The role requires a dynamic professional capable of working in a fast-paced environment and adapting to the diverse needs of clients.
Key areas of oversight and responsibility are:
Project Management – Delivers services to key clients, including project planning and management, environmental assessment, public engagement, and regulatory support, while adhering to health, safety, and environmental policies and best practices. Coordinates project team activities of environmental assessments, compensation/offsetting plans, and related regulatory permitting assignments.
Environmental Science – Develops methodologies, organize field programs, and coordinate logistics for efficient execution while providing expertise in terrestrial and/or aquatic ecology, fish and/or wildlife biology, and species at risk.
Business Development – Assists with Strum’s growth and impact in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Maritime provinces through quality, integrity, and technical competence. Develops and submits proposals, including scoping, budget development, and proposal writing.
Leadership and Networking – Provides leadership, development, and mentorship to staff, focusing on technical writing, field skills, and project direction. Liaises with public and private sector clients, government agencies, sub-consultants, and community representatives, including Indigenous Peoples.
The Ideal Candidate
As the ideal candidate for the Senior Environmental Scientist position, you bring 15+ years of professional experience in the environmental field, a strong background in consulting and project management, and a relevant educational background. You have exceptional attention to detail, proficiency in relevant software, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement and learning. You have excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of environment science and ecology, with an ability to assess and foresee challenges and opportunities.
Your excellent technical and communication skills will help you and the Strum brand shine at business meetings and while engaging with clients, both in-person and virtually. Qualifications and Experience
While the Search Committee recognizes that no one candidate is likely to meet all qualifications in equal measure, those listed below are desirable and will be used to compare candidates.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental sciences or a related environmental discipline.
- Relevant professional designation (e.g., P. Biol, EP, PMP) is an asset.
- Minimum of 15 years of professional experience in the environmental field, including roles with increasing responsibility and an extensive consulting background.
- Proven experience in project management, overseeing technical teams to ensure compliance with quality standards and regulatory criteria.
- Strong research skills to develop project-related solutions aligned with methodologies, regulatory criteria, and industry standards.
- Strong planning and organizational skills to manage timelines, personal schedules, and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in software used for data collection, compilation, and presentations.
