Vancouver Island University is seeking a collaborative, innovative, and entrepreneurial academic leader with a commitment to excellence in teaching and research to lead the Faculty of Science and Technology. Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, the Dean of Science and Technology provides strategic and operational leadership over the administrative and academic priorities of the Faculty. Fostering a forward-thinking, inclusive, and respectful environment, the Dean develops and empowers a team of 100+ faculty, support staff, and administrators to ensure continuous improvement and evolution of a range of programs and services supporting students’ learning, needs, and success. The Dean is a champion for the faculty and is responsible for advancing excellence in teaching and learning, research, scholarship and creative activities and for the development, delivery and ongoing quality review of innovative programs and initiatives within the Faculty. The Dean identifies, initiates, and cultivates strategic relationships with internal peers and external partners and stakeholders in representing the interests and building the profile of the Faculty, the University, and its programs. The Dean also works to advance and support VIU’s commitment to working in partnership with Aboriginal peoples, as laid out in VIU’s Aboriginal Education Plan, in an effort to be a continued leader in supporting Indigenous learners and building relationships within community.
The Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology will possess a record of successful academic administrative experience and familiarity with the process of academic planning, including budget management and resource allocation, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Dean will also hold a PhD in a related Science and have a distinctive record of academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to teaching, learning, and research in a discipline aligned with the Faculty of Science and Technology.
