Corporate Legal Secretary


In 1968, a single terminal facility was built to address the shipping needs of the local community and so the Port of Belledune was born. Through the years, the Port of Belledune has evolved into a four-terminal port that offers modern equipment and infrastructure including a barge terminal, a roll on-roll off terminal and a Modular Component Fabrication Facility. In 2000, the Belledune Port Authority was formed to take over all operations and has become one of the cornerstones of the local economy providing direct and indirect employment for many local residents with a number of features that offer significant advantages to potential clients. Armed with a new strategic direction during a time of significant growth, the Belledune Port Authority is searching for its inaugural Corporate Legal Secretary.

Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Corporate Legal Secretary will ensure the integrity of the governance framework of the Port of Belledune. As an experienced and dynamic professional, the successful candidate will have a strong background in corporate governance and policy, as well as regulatory and legal administration. With a deep and diverse background and a client-centered mentality, the Corporate Legal Secretary will act as an advisor and work within a complex governance model to identify risks, challenges and opportunities, all while building relationships for open communication channels. The role requires one to have significant experience liaising with auditors, lawyers, financial professionals, and other bodies on issues of Board governance. Strong attention to detail is important and one must effectively be able to navigate relationships with the Board of Directors, the CEO, employees, and external stakeholders to further the Port's goals and objectives.

The ideal candidate has a LL B/JD and seven (7) plus years of successful and progressive experience as a corporate lawyer. Must be action-oriented, proactive, and highly capable of managing a variety of legal activities, while providing proactive and effective counsel to the Executive management team, the Board of Commissioners, and other various business units. Drawing upon experience in contracts and real estate law, the successful candidate will lead the corporate governance and legal needs of the Port of Belledune with high integrity and transparency, and consistently provide sound judgment, advice, analysis, and recommendations upon which significant business decisions can be made. With strong business acumen and well-honed problem-solving skills, one must be able to easily adapt to changing needs and priorities and manage multiple projects, all while maintaining a diplomatic and professional demeanor. Must be able to articulate complex corporate governance and legal issues simply and concisely by drawing upon strong interpersonal and communication skills. It will be important to build trust and good working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, possess superior organizational and analytical skills, are detail-oriented, and operates as a strategic thinker to recommend appropriate courses of action based upon thorough risk analysis. Can also recommend and coordinate the implementation of policies and procedures which ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards. Experience working within a regulated environment and knowledge of the Canada Transportation Act, administrative law, and transportation regulations would be considered valuable assets.
