President and Vice Chancellor
St. Jerome’s University is a public Roman Catholic university, founded in 1865, and since 1959 federated with the University of Waterloo. Situated in the heart of University of Waterloo, SJU offers students a supportive and intellectually stimulating community to study, learn, and live. As a Roman Catholic institution historically associated with the educational vision of the Congregation of the Resurrection, SJU is the only Catholic university in the Diocese of Hamilton. In keeping with SJU's mission, all activities and practices function within the context of the Roman Catholic tradition and the principles of academic freedom.
Reporting to the University’s Board of Governors, the President and Vice Chancellor is the chief executive officer of St. Jerome’s University. The President and Vice Chancellor is responsible for the direction of the academic work and general administration of the University, the faculty, the staff, and the students in pursuit of the University’s objectives.
The next President and Vice Chancellor will help to distinguish and promote St. Jerome’s University locally, nationally, and internationally as a pre-eminent Roman Catholic university rooted in the liberal arts and the principles of academic freedom. They will ensure that the University’s culture, services, and policies encourage critical thinking, and the practice of the gospel values of love, truth, justice and hospitality as exemplified by Jesus and encourage the intellectual, spiritual, and social development of the whole person. The next President and Vice Chancellor will nurture and sustain an environment that values and supports open academic inquiry and discovery, excellence in scholarship, research, and creative activity, and the integration and dissemination of knowledge. They will inspire a lifelong commitment to independent and discerning learning by cultivating an environment of research-inspired teaching and through creating opportunities to integrate theory and practice beyond the classroom. They will foster and support a shared identity amongst the SJU community that is characterized by respect, inclusivity, collaboration, and a sense of belonging and that is centered on the wellbeing of students, faculty, staff, and the Board and the promotion of the common good. And they will build collaborative partnerships, programs, and development initiatives that engage St. Jerome’s University locally and globally, ensuring the University’s long-term future, and demonstrating care for the world.
The ideal candidate will hold a doctoral degree, have a distinctive record of academic achievement and have a demonstrated commitment to teaching, learning, and research in a discipline aligned with St. Jerome’s University’s academic programs. The individual will be able to demonstrate successful administrative leadership experience and have experience working within a complex or bicameral governance structure. They will have experience in or an appreciation for working within a federated or affiliated university/college system. The individual should demonstrate an understanding and respect for Roman Catholic doctrine, liturgy and practice. They should have experience in fundraising and alumni relations.
