Vice President, Research & Innovation


Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) is a provincial health, research and academic organization that delivers health services to Nova Scotians and specialized services to the Maritimes and Atlantic Canada. It operates hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province and its team of more than 30,000 health professionals includes employees, doctors, researchers, learners and volunteers who provide the health care and services Nova Scotians need. Working closely with the IWK Health Centre and in partnership with universities, colleges, community groups, schools, governments, foundations and auxiliaries and community health boards, NSHA is evolving and stewarding the health agenda for individuals, families and communities and has charted an ambitious course for improved health outcomes.


Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer of NSHA, the Vice President, Research & Innovation is a member of the executive leadership team and will contribute to the overall vision and priorities of the organization. You will provide leadership on all matters pertaining to research, innovation and translation of knowledge into learning and practice. Working in partnership with senior leaders, clinicians and researchers, you will focus on defining key health policy and delivery questions, as well as implementing research and evidence-based science to improve the quality, effectiveness and sustainability of care and patient/population health outcomes. You will have a leadership role in creating a vision and coordinating the research efforts within NSHA and in collaboration with Dalhousie University and other Nova Scotia universities, Nova Scotia Community College, granting agencies, healthcare foundations, non-government organizations and the broader community which NSHA serves.


As the ideal candidate, you bring at least ten years of senior leadership experience focused on planning and implementing research, innovation and knowledge translation activities within an academic or health science organization, ideally across several locations with multiple partners and stakeholders. Renowned for your scientific excellence, you have a record of success in both research and translating knowledge into practice as well as extensive experience working across academic and clinical environments. You have exceptional communication and presentation skills and a honed ability to lead change and innovation with the goal of embedding research into patient care and health services. You have knowledge of the health research funding environment in Canada, as well as a demonstrated understanding of budgets and long-term financial planning in order to ensure the success of a strategic plan for research. You will fully commit to ensuring the mandate of helping to improve the delivery of health care in Nova Scotia is realized by supporting NSHA researchers and creating a culture of learning, thinking, collaboration, change and helping others to succeed.
