Chief Administrative Officer

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) is one of three campuses of the University of Toronto. The 225-acre campus, which was founded in 1967, is located in a protected green belt along the Credit River in the heart of Mississauga – Canada’s sixth largest city and part of the Greater Toronto Area. Home to approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and over 1,000 faculty and staff, the campus has 17 academic departments, and offers 156 programs in 92 areas of study. Over the past 10 years, UTM has seen remarkable growth by enhancing the quality and quantity of the teaching experience, research and student space. Award winning facilities have been built and enrolment has more than doubled, from about 5,500 in 2003 to more than 15,000 in 2017.  Looking ahead, UTM plans to accelerate the growth of its research enterprise, which will involve investment in infrastructure, faculty, graduate students and programs.  In addition, UTM plans to attract new graduate students and focus on the undergraduate student experience by increasing experiential learning opportunities.  UTM will also continue to build on strong relationships with regional partners, including the City of Mississauga.

Now, with this growth, combined with UTM’s vision for the future, the University seeks an experienced, well-rounded, strategic and collaborative Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to support UTM’s achievement of its academic mission and lead the creation of a sustainable campus for the future.

Reporting to the Vice-President & Principal, the CAO is responsible for the overall business administration of UTM. The CAO leads and oversees the overall operational management of UTM’s administrative and technical functions, including business planning, finance, human resources, facilities management and planning, capital construction, sustainability, information and instructional technology, police services, health and safety, hospitality, retail, and conference services. As the senior non-academic executive at UTM, the CAO is a key advisor to UTM leadership and plays an active role in the attainment of the goals of UTM and the University of Toronto more broadly, including building a sustainable vision for the future of UTM. In addition, the CAO fosters and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring the University’s positive economic and cultural impact on the City of Mississauga and Regional Municipality of Peel.  The CAO will also provide proactive leadership and support to the infrastructure and revenue mandates of UTM, so they contribute to the achievement of the University’s academic mission.

As the ideal candidate, you bring several years of experience as a senior administrator in a complex, broadly accountable organization, preferably in a higher education or public-sector setting. Your successful track record of providing sound strategic advice and leading complex change-management initiatives will allow you to effectively manage people, resources and space within the University. Your professionalism and superior interpersonal skills provide you with the ability to develop effective working relationships and partnerships with various internal and external constituent groups. Excellent judgment, the ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure, a collaborative, consensus-building approach and exceptional communication skills are some of the hallmarks of your leadership style. Your sensitivity to diversity and political astuteness are complemented by a university degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
