Chief Operating Officer

The Faculty of Medicine includes an annual operating budget of more than $47 million.

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is accountable for the effective and efficient operations of the Faculty of Medicine and the stewardship and oversight of the Faculty’s financial and other resources. The COO leads and oversees Faculty operations including communications, finance, governance, human resources, policy, information technology, facilities and space planning.  As the senior member of the Dean’s leadership team, the COO provides strategic, policy, process, systems and operational advice to the Dean, leaders in the Faculty and Departments and administrative units to support the overall management of the Faculty and achievement of the Faculty’s strategic vision, mandate and policy, legislative and regulatory responsibilities. As the operations lead within one of the University’s largest faculties, the COO works collaboratively with the University’s central operations functions to contribute to, influence and interpret plans, policies, systems and processes and to ensure that the Faculty supports the University’s achievement of its strategic vision and mandate. On behalf of the Faculty, the COO represents the Faculty and Dalhousie on committees and in relationships with external stakeholders including the Department of Health and Wellness, the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, the Nova Scotia Health Authority, the IWK Health Centre, Doctors Nova Scotia, Horizon Health Network, the New Brunswick Medical Society, the Government of New Brunswick Departments of Health, Postsecondary Education, Training and Labour, Health PEI, and the Medical Society of PEI.  

As the ideal candidate, you bring significant experience as a senior administrator in a complex broadly accountable organization, preferably in a university or health care setting. Your graduate degree in business, health administration or a related discipline or equivalent combination of experience and education are the foundation for your financial and business acumen and your evidence-based approach to decision making. You possess a proven track record of success in the development and implementation of strategic plans and are able to link daily work to a long-term vision. You have led large and diverse administrative units and are able to successfully manage and oversee complex budgets. An innovative leader, you have successfully led large-scale change projects, and are able to develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours needed to provide new or renewed programs, services and processes to meet current and future needs of the Faculty.
